This bright red tetsubin is shaped like the moon, called tsuki in Japanese.
The moon represents the concrete essence of the female or negative principle in nature, as the male or positive principle is
embodied by the sun. It is a favorite motif for the Chinese poet, so much so that the celebrated versifier Li T'ai-po
was drowned in A.D. 762 from leaning one night over the edge of a boat, in a drunken effort to embrace the reflection
of the moon. This luminary is often depicted in Chinese paintings as a greyish pink disk among the clouds, with curling
waves covering half the base in recognition of its influence over the tides.
